What are designer jeans? How does a pair of jeans become designer?
Designer jeans are high-fashion jeans from designer labels (often featuring the names or logos on the back pockets and on the right front coin-pocket). The Nakash brothers (Joe, Ralph, and Avi) are usually credited with starting the trend with their Jordache line of jeans in 1978. Designer jeans are cut for both women and men and are often worn more fitted than traditional jeans, though you can still snap up more relaxed cuts.
Losing popularity in the 1980s, designer jeans made a fashion come-back in the 1990s with Helmut Lang and specialised designer jeans brands such as Adriano Goldschmied, Citizens of Humanity, Cheap Monday, Chip and Pepper, Desigual, Diesel and William Rast.
Some of the original designer jeans brands, namely Jordache, Calvin Klein, and Dittos have re-launched and adapted the iconic designs that made them popular, e.g. Calvin Klein reissued their design with the loop stitched pocket as a throwback to the 1980s, which it baptised Omega jeans.
Custom cuts and colors can cost thousands. Expensive denim is usually purchased at boutiques and high-end merchandisers.
