When you buy black jeans you know you’re making a wise wardrobe investment.
Did you know?
-The fabric used to make black jeans originated in the southern French town of Nimes from which 'denim' (de Nîmes) gets its name.
-Denim trousers (not yet black jeans) were made in Chieri, a town near Turin in Italy during the Renaissance and popularised in the 19th century when they were sold through the port of Genoa. The word "jeans" comes from the French phrase bleu de Gênes, literally the blue of Genoa.
-Jeans (still blue rather than black jeans, we’ll have to wait a while for the colour to change) were worn by sailors as the all-purpose trousers were perfect to wear while scrubbing down decks and became the official working uniform of the US army early in the 20th century.
-Jeans were worn by workers in factories during World War II - men’s jeans had the zip down the front and women’s jeans down the side. Jeans were loose fitting (none of those skinny black jeans we love)!
-Made popular by James Dean in the film ‘Rebel Without a Cause’, jeans (yes, blue jeans and black jeans) became trendy, rebellious and a favourite among the young.
Next time you buy black jeans, give a moment’s thought to all this history and the long journey jeans have taken to become what they are today.
