Blue jeans: adding denim chic to your wardrobe

Blue jeans are a wonderfully adaptable wardrobe essential and perfect for teaming up with heels or trainers, t-shirts or glamorous strappy tops. Blue jeans are without doubt your most important wardrobe investment, so when you buy blue jeans it’s important to get it right.

Here are a couple of things to bear in mind when you buy blue jeans:

Wide Hips. If your hips are on the wide side, don’t try to hide them with a relaxed fit, they’ll only draw attention to the width. Try to buy blue jeans that are boot-cut. The flare at the bottom helps to minimize thick thighs or wide hips. Make sure your blue jeans are long enough: the hem line should hit the bottom of the ankle. Wearing heels? The hemline can go as low as the floor when standing flat-footed.

Boyish Figure. If you’ve got the opposite problem and your body is rather rectangular, add the illusion of curves by choosing cigarette or tapered blue jeans. Because they are slender at the calves, they make the hips look wider and add curve to flat bottoms. Short Legs. Warning: both tapered and flared blue jeans will add to the stockiness of short legs. To give the illusion of height, choose a pair of high-waisted trouser jeans. The very straight vertical lines create a slimming, lengthening look. Large Bottom. The biggest culprit is pockets. Pockets that are small, too high, close together, or decorated can make a large bottom look bigger. Instead, choose a pair of jeans that have wide, long pockets that rest low on your bottom. Buy blue jeans that are a low rise cut to shorten the back end and that flare at the ankles to help create balance. Less than flat stomach? Choose a pair of high-waisted jeans to help create a smooth plane over your entire stomach – though make sure the blues jeans don’t go above the belly button. Avoid jeans that tie, have pleats or an elastic waistband, or are decorated in front – these draw unwanted attention.

Bon shopping!
